Level 2 Award in Mental Health Awareness & Mental Health First Aid
One in every four people experience mental health problems at some point in their lives and it’s clear that a greater awareness of mental health issues and an understanding of how to manage our mental health is required.
This Level 2 Award in Mental Health Awareness aims to increase people’s awareness and understanding of mental health. This understanding will help to reduce stigma and discrimination and encourage people to talk about mental health.
Additionally, the qualification provides learners with an understanding of ways to manage and improve their own mental health and how to offer mental health first aid to others.
Who is this course for?
There is no specific entry requirement other than as the learner you must be aged 16+
This qualification is aimed at learners wishing to improve their knowledge and awareness of mental health and mental health first aid.
The purpose of this qualification is to provide learners with:
- an understanding and awareness of mental health
- an understanding of common mental health disorders and issues
- help reduce stigma and discrimination
- encourage people to talk about mental health
In addition, the qualification should provide learners with the ability to apply their knowledge of mental health.
They can do this through recognising and responding to the signs of mental ill health in themselves and others.
Which will in turn enable them to offer mental health first aid to people experiencing mental ill health.
How is this course structured?
This course is delivered via blended learning. After you register you will be sent a manual in the post …an actual paper workbook! You will also receive an email with your own personal login to access the Active IQ eLearning Portal.
Then you will work your way through online tutorials via our E-learning platform with the help of your manual, which will be posted to you within a week of registering**. This can be completed in the comfort of your own home and at a time that suits you.
Included in your training is the option to join us for a face-to-face group discussion in Edinburgh or through an online interactive group discussion. As this is a newly launched course, we’re still figuring out the best way to deliver this to suit everybody. You will be offered a few options for the online discussion if you find that the face to face day does not suit you …or you can’t travel to Edinburgh. Either way we will accommodate you.

in order to achieve this award,you will be required to complete an online worksheet plus an online case study – all of which is thoroughly explained in the course materials.
Upon successful completion of the course work you will receive an Active IQ Certificate : Level 2 Award in Mental Health Awareness & Mental Health First Aid.
The two mandatory units required for successful completion of this award are:
- Mental Health Awareness
- Mental Health First Aid
On completion of your training you will understand the definition of mental health including common misconceptions surrounding mental health.
Furthermore, you will understand mental health disorders including the identification of the main signs and symptoms of common mental health disorders to include;
- Anxiety disorders: stress, phobias and post traumatic stress disorder
- Eating disorders: anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa
- Addiction and substance misuse
- Self harm
Additionally, you will understand how to identify common treatments and interventions used to manage mental health and mental ill health and be able to describe the main risk factors associated with mental ill health.
And you will also be able to understand the support and advice available for mental ill health and identify credible sources of information, support and guidance. Plus the ability to identify appropriate credible organisations offering support services and the appropriate responses that can be made to support someone with mental ill health.

We’ve been asked how quickly this qualification can be achieved and we think you could complete the worksheets in your Learner Achievement Portfolio within eight weeks from your start date.
You can of course take longer of you like …however we know how these things can drag on and on so we advise you to take your knowledge out into the world sooner rather than later.
